This past Friday, we had a rather interesting and exciting thing happen! We were all ready to start the AI breeding process that afternoon. Mom and I were cleaning down town Indy, and James called and said one of our year old heifers was calving! They are too young at that age, so we were quite concerned. She wasn't even supposed to be bred. We think now that she was pregnant when we got her at the end of August. That means she was bred when she was still nursing her mom!

James' cousin, Charlie, helped us all evening. James and I were trying to pull the calf out. Then Darrell, our AI tech, came and was trying to help us as well. The calf was WAY too big and wouldn't come out, so we had to take the mom for an emergeny c section. She had gone down and would not get up. We had to pull her out of the chute and there was tons of mud everywhere! We could not get her up.

After we got her out of the chute, we had to do preg checks on the other 8 heifers to make sure that we didn't have any more pregnant ones and then have to do the same procedure on them. Darrell bred the others while we had them in the chute. It was really neat....

We took 178, the pregant heifer, up to the vet, about 1 1/2 hours away. All this while, she had the hooves of the calf hanging out of her. They wouldn't go back in. We had pulled and pulled and pulled and one of the hooves had come off completly. :( I was crying and praying and so was everyone else! Life was very traumatic that day.

Anyways...we took her and they did the c section. Usually they do them while the cow is still standing, but since we couldn't get her up, they had to sedate her and then roll her on her back. They cut her belly and took out the baby. He weighed 79 lbs. Way too big for the mom's age! She still would not stand after IVs and meds, so we had to leave her at the vet. We're still waiting on news and may have to go pick her up today. She's trying, but she's still too weak.
Bro. Bryan, our pastor, called me last night, Saturday, and asked how the cow was doing. He said that it was the first time he'd actually prayed for a cow :) Believe me, it wasn't the first time for me, and it probably won't be the last time! I've prayed so hard about that cow!
